WHAT: Focus groups to improve the utilization, quality and knowledge of services for students regarding Intimate Partner Violence (IPV)

WHEN: We will be conducting groups over the coming months, scheduled to meet your availability

WHY: Half of Penn students reported experiencing IPV, and very few could name campus resources

We anticipate that a focus group will take about an hour and a half. In appreciation for your participation we will provide you with your choice of a gift certificate to a local retailer or a pair of movie tickets.

Hey Day

HEY DAY IS AN INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT PENN TRADITION
-Many students consider Hey Day to be the most memorable day of their undergraduate experience.
-The unique and important Penn tradition, which brings together the entire class as is only otherwise done on Commencement and Convocation, links generations of students and alumni.

LAST YEAR'S HEY DAY PUT THE TRADITION IN JEOPARDY
-Students were injured by the hazing on Locust Walk.
-The damage to Locust Walk cost thousands of dollars to clean up, ruining the following year's Senior Week budget.

THIS YEAR'S HEY DAY PLAN
-Seniors can sign a pledge of responsibility on Locust Walk during the week leading up to Hey Day. The pledge allows students to attend the "Hey Deja Vu" BBQ in Wynn Commons on Hey Day, where they can enjoy a performance by Kenn Kweder, eat a great lunch, and receive a free t-shirt. Participants will also be provided with streamers and most likely marshmallows to throw on Locust Walk during the Junior procession at the conclusion of the BBQ. As signers of the pledge, these Seniors agree to only throw these two items.
-Seniors who participate in this event will get lots of benefits, but must commit to ONLY throwing the provided items as the Juniors walk down Locust Walk. To be clear, all students are not allowed to throw any items on Locust Walk other than the one's provided at the picnic.

CONSEQUENCES OF AN UNSAFE HEY DAY
-The Atlantic City trip during the Class of 2007's Senior Week this May will be cancelled.
-The current spring semester Hey Day event will be ended, and the Class of 2009 will participate in a Hey Day event to be held in the fall of 2008.
-The Class of 2007 maybe be viewed by students, alumni and administrators as being responsible for ruining the Hey Day tradition.

WHAT PENN STUDENTS CAN DO
-Seniors should sign the pledge during the week leading up to Hey Day and attend the "Hey Deja Vu" BBQ in Wynn Commons.
-Underclassmen must refrain from throwing any items during the Junior Procession and, along with upperclassmen, encourage students to behave responsibly.

Matthew Mawhinney

Worked for the U.S. Agency for International Development in Morocco. Matt
developed a program in youth journalism and helped bring in professional
journalists for USAID.

Julie Perilstein

Worked for Russell Reynolds Associates, a global consulting firm. Julie worked
in New York as a research assistant, helping Russell Reynolds as they went
headhunting for different executive level positions.

Noah Weiss

Worked for U.S. Senator Arlen Specter. Noah researched legislation, worked in
community outreach and in constituent case work.

Amanda Schreiber

Worked for JPMorgan Chase as a summer analyst. Amanda focused on their mining
and metals division and at the end of her internship presented a project
analysis to JPMorgan Chase.

The Kelly Writers House presents SPELLDOWN! -- a Spelling Bee and Book
Drive on Saturday March 31st at 7:00 PM, featuring musical guests Red
Heart the Ticker, difficult to spell foods, awards and Y-O-U!

SPELLDOWN! is the kick-off event for the Writers House Book Drive to
benefit the South Philadelphia YMCA Early Head Start Program, an
organization that promotes early childhood literacy within families
who are living at or below the federal poverty line.

All Writers House events are free and open to the public, and there is
a suggested donation of a new or lightly used children's book from all
participants and audience members.

On behalf of the UA, I've been working with the New York Times to bring a Pilot Readership Program to campus starting this coming Monday. Whether or not you are an avid reader of the NYTimes, it's a great opportunity to read the paper for free. Here's the blurb being circulated:

The Undergraduate Assembly, working with the New York Times' Pilot Readership Program, will be bringing free copies of the New York Times to Penn's campus at the following locations: Houston Hall, Van Pelt Library, 1920 Commons and the College Houses.

Please enjoy a copy at your convenience. The program will run for four weeks, and then the UA will debate whether or not to provide funding to make the New York Times available free to students thereafter.

Clash of the Classes at the Palestra

On Friday, February 9th show your red and blue pride at the Clash of the Classes at The Palestra.

The Penn Men's Basketball team will take on Dartmouth at 7 p.m. and for just $10 you will get a ticket to the game, FREE food, and a FREE t-shirt unique to your class.

There will be a pre-game event in Hutchinson Gymnasium and then during the game the classes will compete against each other in various contests.

In 1977 DanceBrazil was founded by Jelon Vieira after evolving from grass-roots workshops at the Clark Center for the Arts in NYC. Alvin Ailey joined the board of directors in 1980 and helped focus the objectives of DanceBrazil, emphasizing the company's ability to speak to a broad North American community. Soon after, the Capoeira Foundation was founded to undertake the long-range goal of spreading an Afro-Brazilian cultural message through its educational, presenting, and producing activities. Within a few years DanceBrazil premiered at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall.

In 1985 DanceBrazil premiered Orfeo Negro at the Riverside Dance Festival to critical and popular acclaim; the piece established the company's movement aesthetic - one fusing traditional Afro-Brazilian and modern dance. PBS's Alive from Off Center commissioned and premiered nation-wide Aurora by Jelon Vieira and Nem Brito in 1988. Since then the company has continued to tour throughout the U.S. and internationally.
